Turn Projects into Real Organisational Value
Projects deliver outputs. Successful organisations deliver benefits.
Many projects are completed on time and within budget, yet fail to achieve the improvements, efficiencies, or strategic outcomes that justified the investment in the first place. The ability to identify, define, manage and realise benefits is what separates successful change from activity that simply consumes resources.
CITI’s Understanding Benefits in Projects masterclass helps individuals and organisations shift their focus from delivering outputs to delivering measurable value. Using our practical Beyond Method® approach, participants learn how to create a clear connection between strategy, change initiatives and benefits realisation, ensuring that projects contribute to meaningful and sustainable organisational outcomes.
Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.
A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!
Projects are rarely undertaken for the purpose of creating documents, systems or processes. They exist to deliver value. This highly interactive masterclass explores why benefits are often misunderstood, why many organisations struggle to realise them, and how a more structured approach can significantly improve investment outcomes.
Participants explore the relationship between organisational strategy, business need, stakeholder expectations and project delivery. The course demonstrates how benefits should drive decision-making from the outset, helping teams maintain focus on the outcomes that matter most rather than simply delivering activities and outputs. Through practical discussion and examples, learners gain a deeper appreciation of how successful organisations create and sustain value through change.
The course covers the fundamentals of benefits identification, definition and ownership, together with practical techniques for developing benefits profiles, mapping benefits to organisational objectives and establishing meaningful measures of success. Participants learn how benefits emerge from changes in behaviour, process and capability, and how projects can be structured to support their achievement.
Topics include benefits versus outputs, benefits ownership, benefit mapping, stakeholder engagement, measurement and tracking, common causes of benefits failure, governance considerations and the practical challenges associated with benefits realisation. Learners leave with a clearer understanding of how to ensure that projects deliver genuine business value rather than simply completing activities.
At CITI, we believe that successful delivery requires more than following a methodology. Our Beyond Method® philosophy focuses on helping people understand the thinking behind good decision-making, effective change and successful outcomes. Rather than teaching benefits management as a compliance exercise, we focus on helping participants develop the judgment and practical skills needed to apply benefits thinking in real organisational environments.
Through facilitated discussion, collaborative exercises, practical case studies and proven CITI thinking tools, participants explore the challenges they face within their own organisations and develop approaches that can be applied immediately. The result is a more confident, outcome-focused mindset that helps individuals and organisations improve value realisation and make better investment decisions.
