Getting the requirements right in project management

Overview

Requirements sit at the heart of every successful project. Whether delivering technology, organisational change, infrastructure or business transformation, projects succeed when the problem is understood before solutions are designed. This engaging course explores how project professionals can establish clear, testable and achievable requirements that align business needs, stakeholder expectations and project objectives.

Through practical discussion and real-world scenarios, participants learn how to define the true business need, distinguish between requirements and solutions, and create a shared understanding among stakeholders. The course provides a structured but flexible framework for managing requirements throughout the project lifecycle, even when priorities, constraints and expectations evolve.

Aligned with CITI’s Beyond Method philosophy, the learning focuses on the behaviours, judgement and stakeholder engagement skills that underpin effective requirements management. Rather than relying solely on process, participants develop the confidence to ask better questions, challenge assumptions and ensure projects remain focused on delivering meaningful outcomes.

Taking you Beyond Methodâ„¢

Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.

A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!

Course content

Participants explore the complete requirements management journey, from identifying business needs and defining problems through to documenting, reviewing and validating requirements. The course examines both functional and non-functional requirements, helping learners understand how quality, performance, user experience and operational considerations influence successful solutions.

The programme introduces practical techniques for eliciting requirements from stakeholders, facilitating workshops, conducting reviews and creating specifications that are clear, measurable and testable. Participants also learn how to establish meaningful acceptance criteria, manage scope effectively and address changing requirements without losing sight of project objectives.

Additional topics include stakeholder engagement, product development considerations, requirements traceability, requirements testing, solution evaluation and maintaining alignment between business goals and project deliverables. Throughout the course, learners work through realistic examples that demonstrate the challenges commonly encountered in complex project environments.

Learning approach

CITI’s Beyond Method approach recognises that requirements are not created by documents alone. They emerge through effective communication, critical thinking, collaboration and informed decision-making. This course therefore combines proven requirements management techniques with the interpersonal skills needed to uncover real stakeholder needs and build consensus around project priorities.

Learning is highly interactive, blending facilitated discussion, practical exercises, case studies and collaborative problem-solving activities. Participants are encouraged to explore the challenges they face within their own projects and apply new techniques in a supportive environment that promotes knowledge sharing and reflection.

By connecting practical tools with real-world application, learners leave with techniques they can immediately use to improve project definition, reduce rework, strengthen stakeholder confidence and increase the likelihood of successful delivery. The result is a learning experience that develops capability rather than simply teaching process.
