This course is designed for Project Managers, Programme Managers, Change Managers, PMO professionals, Business Analysts, Workstream Leads, Sponsors, and anyone responsible for engaging stakeholders and communicating project outcomes across organisational boundaries. It is particularly valuable for professionals operating in complex, politically sensitive, or matrix-managed environments.

Stakeholder engagement is frequently cited as one of the most significant factors in project success or failure. Yet many organisations continue to treat it as a peripheral activity rather than a core leadership responsibility. This course challenges that perspective by exploring how stakeholder identification, analysis, engagement, influence, and communication planning can become central components of effective project delivery. Participants will learn how different stakeholders define success, how power and influence shape project environments, and how communication strategies can be designed to create alignment and positive momentum.
Using CITI’s Beyond Method® approach, delegates will examine projects as social systems rather than simply collections of tasks, schedules, and governance controls. The course explores the reality that stakeholders cannot simply be “managed”; they must be understood, engaged, influenced, and supported through meaningful interactions that build trust and commitment. Participants will gain valuable insights into stakeholder motivations, expectations, and behaviours while learning practical approaches for navigating competing priorities and organisational complexity.

Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.
A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!
Throughout the course, participants will explore the complete stakeholder engagement lifecycle, beginning with stakeholder identification and analysis. They will learn how to assess stakeholder interests, influence, attitudes, priorities, and expectations, using proven techniques to understand who matters most to delivery success and why. The programme examines stakeholder mapping, influence assessment, political awareness, and the role of perception in shaping project outcomes.
The course then focuses on creating practical engagement and communication strategies. Delegates learn how to design communication management plans, tailor messages to different audiences, select appropriate communication methods and channels, and establish meaningful feedback mechanisms. Particular attention is given to managing expectations, influencing key decision-makers, handling resistance, and maintaining engagement throughout changing project circumstances.
Finally, participants explore advanced concepts including stakeholder risk management, collaborative behaviours, sponsor engagement, complex stakeholder ecosystems, and sustaining commitment during change. Through practical exercises and case studies, delegates develop stakeholder engagement approaches that can be applied immediately within live projects, programmes, and organisational transformation initiatives.
