Resource and quality management in projects
Intermediate – suitable for Project Managers, Programme Managers, PMO professionals, Team Leaders, Change Managers, Project Support Officers, and professionals responsible for project delivery, planning, governance, or assurance.
Project Managers, Programme Managers, PMO Teams, Resource Managers, Team Leaders, Change Professionals, Sponsors, Project Coordinators, and individuals seeking to strengthen their project delivery capability.
Typically delivered as a one or two-day workshop, either virtually or face-to-face, with practical exercises, case studies, and optional follow-on development through the CITI Beyond Method® and YourCITI™ platforms.
Projects operate within finite constraints. Resources, budgets, schedules, skills, facilities, equipment, and stakeholder availability must all be carefully managed to ensure delivery objectives can be achieved. At the same time, project outputs must meet agreed requirements and standards to ensure they are fit for purpose and deliver the intended benefits. Resource management is therefore about securing, allocating, and optimising the internal and external resources needed to achieve successful outcomes.
The Resource and Quality Management in Projects course explores how effective planning, allocation, governance, and monitoring help organisations make better use of available resources while maintaining quality expectations throughout the project lifecycle. Participants gain practical insight into identifying resource needs, managing competing demands, understanding capacity constraints, and ensuring project outputs meet stakeholder requirements and acceptance criteria.
Rather than treating resource management and quality management as separate disciplines, the course demonstrates how they work together to create confidence in delivery. Delegates learn how realistic planning, effective allocation, quality assurance, quality control, and continual improvement support successful project outcomes while reducing rework, delays, risk exposure, and unnecessary cost.
Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.
A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!
This course explores the practical principles and techniques associated with resource planning, utilisation, optimisation, and quality management. Participants examine how project resources are identified, categorised, scheduled, allocated, and monitored throughout the project lifecycle. Topics include resource estimation, resource availability, organisational breakdown structures, responsibility assignment matrices (RACI), resource smoothing, and resource levelling techniques.
Delegates also learn how quality requirements are defined, planned, managed, and measured to ensure project outputs are fit for purpose. The programme covers quality planning, quality assurance, quality control, acceptance criteria, stakeholder expectations, audits, testing, inspections, and continual improvement. Participants explore how quality standards align with business cases, project objectives, and successful benefits delivery.
Through practical exercises, case studies, and facilitated discussions, participants develop a deeper understanding of how resource constraints and quality considerations influence project schedules, costs, risks, governance, and decision-making. The emphasis is on applying proven approaches that improve delivery confidence, strengthen project performance, and support successful outcomes within real organisational environments.
The Resource and Quality Management in Projects course is delivered using the CITI Beyond Method®, an outcome-focused approach that combines theory, practical application, reflection, and workplace relevance. Rather than concentrating solely on project techniques, the Beyond Method® helps participants understand how resource and quality management contribute to broader organisational success.
Through facilitated workshops, practical project scenarios, real-world case studies, collaborative discussions, and hands-on exercises, delegates apply concepts directly to project environments similar to those they encounter every day. Learning focuses on developing practical judgement, effective decision-making, and the confidence to deal with competing demands and delivery pressures.

The Beyond Method® encourages participants to look beyond project outputs and focus on achieving sustainable outcomes, stakeholder value, quality delivery, and organisational capability. Delegates leave with practical tools, techniques, and action plans that can be immediately applied to improve resource utilisation, strengthen quality performance, and increase the likelihood of successful project delivery.
