Project Management for non-Project Managers
Foundation to Intermediate – ideal for professionals who need to understand and engage with projects, without leading them directly.
Perfect for business managers, functional leads, subject matter experts, and operational staff who interact with projects and need to support delivery more effectively.
Typically delivered over 2–3 days, with flexible delivery options including virtual, classroom, or blended formats.
This Project Management for Non‑Project Managers course provides a practical introduction to how projects operate within organisations and why they often struggle to deliver expected outcomes. You will explore the fundamental differences between project work and business-as-usual activity, and understand the role that structure, governance, and decision-making play in successful delivery.
The course focuses on helping you understand the bigger picture—how projects connect to strategy, how they create change, and why collaboration between business and project teams is critical. By building this understanding, you will be better equipped to engage with projects, challenge constructively, and contribute to meaningful results.
Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.
A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!
The course introduces the key elements of project management in a way that is practical and relevant to non-project roles. You will explore how projects are defined, structured, and delivered, including core areas such as scope, planning, risk, communication, and monitoring progress. These concepts are positioned to help you understand what good looks like—and how to recognise when delivery is at risk.
There is a strong focus on roles, responsibilities, and stakeholder engagement, highlighting how different parts of the organisation contribute to successful project outcomes. You will learn how to interpret project information, understand progress and reporting, and engage more confidently with project managers and delivery teams. The aim is not technical mastery, but practical awareness that improves collaboration and results.
This Project Management for Non‑Project Managers course is delivered using CITI’s Beyond Method® approach, which focuses on building real-world capability rather than following a rigid methodology. We recognise that non-project professionals need understanding, confidence, and judgement—not complex process frameworks.
Learning is interactive, discussion-led, and grounded in real organisational scenarios. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences, explore common challenges, and reflect on how project activity impacts their own roles. Through practical exercises and facilitated discussion, you will develop the ability to engage with projects in a more informed, confident, and constructive way.
Beyond Method® learning blends knowledge, experience, and behavioural insight—ensuring you leave with practical understanding that you can apply immediately in your day-to-day work.
