Developing high-performing teams

Overview

Every team has the potential to perform at a higher level, yet many struggle with communication challenges, unclear expectations, competing priorities, low engagement, or ineffective collaboration. High-performing teams do not emerge by chance; they are intentionally developed through effective leadership, shared purpose, psychological safety, and continuous learning.

The Developing High-Performing Teams course explores the characteristics, behaviours, and conditions that enable teams to consistently achieve outstanding results. Participants examine what differentiates high-performing teams from average teams and learn how leadership, culture, communication, and capability development contribute to team success.

The programme helps individuals understand how teams evolve over time, how trust and collaboration are established, and how leaders can support people to perform at their best. The course focuses on creating environments where people feel empowered to contribute, take ownership, innovate, and support each other in achieving shared objectives. CITI’s leadership and capability development frameworks emphasise collaboration, coaching, mentoring, communities of practice, accountability, resilience, and team effectiveness as critical factors in organisational success.

Taking you Beyond Method

Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.

A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!

Course content

This course explores the practical components of building and sustaining high-performing teams. Participants examine team dynamics, communication styles, collaboration techniques, psychological safety, motivation, trust building, conflict resolution, accountability, and performance management.

Delegates learn how to create clear purpose and alignment, establish effective team behaviours, develop stronger working relationships, and improve team engagement. The course also examines leadership approaches that encourage ownership, empowerment, inclusion, learning, and continuous improvement. Adaptive leadership, coaching, mentoring, and situational leadership approaches are explored as practical tools for supporting different stages of team development.

Through practical exercises, team-based activities, facilitated discussion, self-assessment, and real-world case studies, participants gain insight into common challenges that affect team performance and learn practical techniques for overcoming them. Topics include developing trust, creating coaching cultures, encouraging innovation, improving resilience, enhancing collaboration, and managing team performance in changing environments.

Learning approach

The Developing High-Performing Teams course is delivered using the CITI Beyond Method®, an outcome-focused approach that goes beyond traditional classroom learning to support lasting behavioural and organisational improvement. Rather than simply teaching team theories, the Beyond Method® focuses on helping participants apply practical concepts directly within their own teams and workplace environment.

Through facilitated workshops, experiential learning activities, coaching conversations, peer discussion, self-reflection, practical team challenges, and collaborative problem-solving exercises, participants build both knowledge and confidence. CITI’s Beyond Method® approach combines formal learning with practical application, coaching, mentoring, communities of practice, and workplace-based development to maximise long-term performance improvement.

The Beyond Method® helps participants understand not only how teams work, but why they perform the way they do. Delegates leave with practical tools, strengthened leadership capability, improved communication skills, and a personalised action plan that can be immediately applied to enhance team effectiveness, engagement, and performance.
