Corporate Portfolio Management

Overview

Align strategy to delivery and ensure investment delivers real value

In today’s organisations, success isn’t just about delivering projects—it’s about delivering the right projects. The Corporate Portfolio Management course from CITI is designed to help leaders and delivery professionals make better investment decisions, align initiatives to strategy, and ensure that organisational resources are focused where they create the greatest value.

Built on CITI’s Beyond Method® approach, this course moves beyond governance models to focus on making portfolio management practical, impactful, and aligned to real business outcomes.

Taking you Beyond Method

Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.

A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!

Course content

This Corporate Portfolio Management course focuses on how organisations can ensure that their investments in change are aligned to strategy and deliver measurable value. You will explore how portfolios are structured, why misalignment occurs, and how to create a clear line of sight from strategic intent through to delivery outcomes.

The course challenges traditional portfolio management approaches by emphasising decision-making, prioritisation, and alignment in complex environments. You will gain insight into how organisations balance competing demands, manage constraints, and make informed choices about where to invest time, money, and resources.

The course explores how to design, implement, and evolve a corporate portfolio management approach that supports effective decision-making and delivery. You will examine how to define and prioritise initiatives, assess value and risk, and align projects and programmes to strategic objectives.

Key areas include portfolio governance, investment appraisal, benefits realisation, resource allocation, and performance monitoring. You will also explore how to manage portfolio-level risks, resolve conflicts between competing initiatives, and ensure that decision-making remains agile and responsive to change. The content focuses on how to create a structured yet adaptable portfolio approach that drives clarity, consistency, and performance across the organisation.

Learning approach

This Corporate Portfolio Management course is delivered using CITI’s Beyond Method® approach, which focuses on building real capability that works in practice. Rather than applying a single framework, we draw on a wide range of proven portfolio, programme, and project practices—adapting them to your organisation’s context, culture, and maturity.

Learning is highly interactive and experience-led. Through facilitated discussions, scenario-based exercises, and real-world case studies, you will explore how portfolio management works in reality—and how to improve it. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own organisational challenges, test new approaches, and develop practical strategies that can be applied immediately.

The result is a stronger ability to make informed decisions, align delivery to strategy, and ensure that your organisation’s portfolio delivers meaningful and measurable outcomes.
