Benefits and the Business Case

Overview

Make Better Investment Decisions. Realise More Value. Deliver Benefits That Matter.

Projects and programmes are approved because they promise value. Yet many organisations struggle to translate investment into measurable outcomes. The challenge is often not the delivery of products and outputs, but ensuring that benefits are clearly defined, owned, tracked and realised.

CITI’s Benefits and the Business Case masterclass goes beyond methodology to help participants understand how to create compelling business cases, define meaningful benefits, and establish a clear line of sight between strategic objectives, change initiatives and measurable outcomes. Using CITI’s Beyond Method® approach, participants develop practical skills that can be applied immediately within their own organisational environment.

Taking you Beyond Methodâ„¢

Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.

A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!

Course content

Writing a business case is often treated as a governance exercise; however, successful organisations understand that a business case is the foundation for delivering value. This engaging and highly practical masterclass explores how benefits drive investment decisions, how robust business cases support strategic objectives, and why many organisations struggle to realise the outcomes they originally set out to achieve.

Using CITI’s Beyond Method® philosophy, participants move beyond templates and compliance, learning how to think critically about value, change, benefits and stakeholder expectations. The focus is on creating realistic, evidence-based business cases that support better decision-making throughout the lifecycle of a project, programme or transformation initiative.

The course explores the relationship between strategy, business cases, benefits, impacts and project delivery. Participants learn how to identify and define meaningful benefits, understand benefit ownership, develop benefits maps, create measurable success criteria and build stronger investment justifications. The programme also examines common causes of benefits failure, governance considerations, business case review techniques and methods for tracking benefits throughout delivery and beyond implementation.

Practical exercises and case studies help learners connect theory with real organisational challenges, enabling them to apply concepts immediately within their own projects and programmes.

Learning approach

At CITI, we believe that methods and frameworks alone do not guarantee successful outcomes. Our Beyond Method® approach focuses on developing judgement, critical thinking and practical decision-making capabilities that help people deliver change more effectively in complex environments.

Rather than simply teaching a process, this masterclass uses facilitated discussion, real-world examples, collaborative exercises and proven thinking tools to help participants understand why benefits matter, how value is created and what successful organisations do differently. The result is greater confidence, stronger business cases and a clearer focus on delivering measurable outcomes that truly support organisational objectives.
