Stakeholder Value and Benefits

Overview

Deliver Change That Matters to the People Who Matter Most

Projects and programmes succeed when stakeholders see value. Yet many change initiatives focus on delivering outputs without fully understanding what success looks like from the perspective of those affected. When stakeholder needs, expectations and benefits are not clearly understood, even well-delivered projects can struggle to achieve adoption, support and lasting impact.

CITI’s Stakeholder Value and Benefits masterclass helps professionals understand how value is perceived, created and realised by different stakeholder groups. Using our practical Beyond Method® approach, participants learn how to identify stakeholder needs, define meaningful benefits and create stronger alignment between organisational objectives, project outcomes and stakeholder expectations.

Taking you Beyond Method

Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.

A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!

Course content

Stakeholders rarely judge success based on whether a project was delivered on time or within budget. They judge success based on whether the change resolves problems, creates opportunities, improves performance or delivers outcomes that matter to them. Understanding the relationship between stakeholder expectations and benefits realisation is therefore critical to successful change.

This engaging and practical masterclass explores how organisations can better identify stakeholder value, align projects to genuine needs and increase the likelihood of successful adoption and benefits realisation. Participants gain a deeper understanding of why stakeholders support or resist change and how value can be defined from multiple perspectives across a project or programme lifecycle.

Participants explore how value is perceived by different stakeholder groups and how benefits can be identified, defined and managed to support organisational objectives. The course examines techniques for stakeholder analysis, value identification, benefits mapping and benefits ownership, helping participants understand how to create stronger connections between change initiatives and stakeholder outcomes.

Topics include stakeholder needs and expectations, benefits versus outputs, value creation, benefits dependency mapping, communication and engagement strategies, benefits ownership, success measurement and the role of governance in supporting value realisation. Practical exercises and case studies help learners apply concepts directly to their own projects and organisational challenges.

Learning approach

At CITI, we believe that stakeholder engagement is about more than communication plans and influence strategies. Our Beyond Method® philosophy helps participants understand the underlying drivers of stakeholder behaviour, the relationship between value and change, and the practical decisions that support successful outcomes.

Through facilitated discussions, collaborative exercises, real-world examples and proven CITI thinking tools, learners explore how benefits emerge through changes in behaviour, capability and organisational performance. Rather than focusing solely on process, we help participants develop the judgement and practical understanding needed to create change that delivers value for stakeholders and organisations alike. The result is a more outcome-focused approach to stakeholder engagement that strengthens support, improves adoption and increases the likelihood of long-term success.
