How Value Arises in Projects

Overview

Stop Delivering Activities. Start Delivering Value.

Projects consume time, money and effort, but organisations do not invest in projects simply to create outputs. They invest because they expect value. Yet many project teams focus on schedules, deliverables and milestones without fully understanding how value is actually created.

CITI’s How Value Arises in Projects masterclass explores one of the most important questions in project delivery: where does value come from, and how can we maximise it? Using our practical Beyond Method® approach, participants learn how projects contribute to strategic objectives, how benefits emerge through change, and how delivery teams can focus on outcomes that matter rather than simply completing activities.

Taking you Beyond Method

Beyond Method is learning constructed using our own best practice created from our inception as a specialist university institute in 1983; fusing the expertise of Cranfield University with the interests of six major users of change management: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Longman.

A significant amount of research and investment was made into Cranfield Information Technology Institute (shortened to CITI in 1988) to take change professionals beyond methodologies – and learn how to successfully implement change!

Course content

Many organisations measure project success by whether something was delivered. However, successful delivery and successful outcomes are not always the same thing. Real value emerges when project outputs lead to meaningful changes in behaviours, processes, capabilities and performance. Understanding this relationship is critical for anyone involved in delivering change.

This engaging masterclass explores the journey from strategic intent through to realised value. Participants examine how projects contribute to organisational objectives, how benefits are created and sustained, and why some initiatives deliver significant value while others struggle to achieve their intended outcomes. The course challenges traditional assumptions about project success and encourages learners to adopt a more outcome-focused mindset.

Participants explore the relationship between strategy, business need, benefits, impacts, change and project delivery. The course examines how value can be identified, measured and protected throughout the lifecycle of a project, while highlighting the common obstacles that prevent organisations from achieving the outcomes they expected.

Topics include value creation, benefits and outcomes, stakeholder perspectives, benefits mapping, organisational change, business justification, governance, decision-making and sustaining value after project completion. Learners gain practical insights into how project decisions influence business outcomes and how they can contribute to greater value realisation within their own organisations.

Learning approach

At CITI, we believe that successful benefits realisation requires more than following a process or completing a template. Our Beyond Method® philosophy focuses on developing the judgement, critical thinking and practical skills needed to understand how value is created, protected and sustained in complex organisational environments.

Through facilitated discussion, collaborative workshops, real-world case studies and proven CITI thinking tools, participants explore the challenges that prevent benefits from being realised and learn how to overcome them. Rather than focusing solely on methodology, we help learners understand the behaviours, decisions and governance practices that enable organisations to achieve meaningful and measurable outcomes from change.
