Project management best practice

So you're accredited, now what?

Accredited learning with follow up exams can feel like a tick box exercise, to prove an individual is able to retain information for a short period and regurgitate this information to correctly answer multiple-choice or short answer questions. The common problem with this style of learning is there is not enough opportunity to apply learning for the concepts to embed, and the questions are not always challenging enough for the learner to think deeply, critically or contextually. Therefore, the goal for the learner moves from engaging with the content to obtain understanding, to simply memorising the theory in order to receive a certificate.

YourCITI Project Space™

The following segments highlight why, in my experience YourCITI Project Space is significantly different to other project management learning assets and platforms, and the benefits of learning via this platform.

YourCITI Project Space has been developed in a way where users of varying capabilities are able to benefit. The platform stands out because of its unique spiral curriculum approach, preventing learners from skimming through the content and truly engaging with it for understanding, which enables retention of the content. The following points highlight what I believe makes YourCITI Project Space so effective:

Structured progression
From the beginning, the foundation level lessons follow the project lifecycle step by step, learners must complete and pass each segment of lessons before moving forward. This creates a hunger to learn, as learners feel a sense of accomplishment as they progress further.
Immediate knowledge testing
Assessments after each stage test understanding from multiple angles, reinforcing learning and preventing superficial memorisation
Confidence and alignment
Completing the foundation level topics immediately empowered me to make informed decisions and gain consistency in learning and application of concepts across teams. Individuals of differing backgrounds are able to bring ideas to the table no matter what varied project experience we have, whilst also becoming better aligned as a team. This alignment builds confidence, enabling individuals to challenge the status quo with conviction. In true CITI style, we take pride in being recognised as thought leaders, enablers and challengers.
Natural skill development
Accessing the intermediate level assets; this is where the true power of the Spiral Curriculum is unlocked. Building on the learned foundation concepts, it deepens knowledge through the use of realistic case studies and collaborative activities that are integrated within the lessons. This progression is a key differentiator of YourCITI Project Space – the intermediate level doesn’t just revisit previous concepts; it expands them to a greater depth by requiring learners to retain and apply their understanding within the assessments and tests. The CITI Spiral Curriculum ensures continuous growth and mastery of project management principles through continuous learning and application to ensure there is depth and breadth.
Real-world relevance
Throughout both levels, evolving scenarios are introduced via CITI’s own PlotCo® case study, mirroring real-world client situations. Learners tackle complex, collaborative activities – many without template answers to encourage critical thinking, depth of thought, and problem-solving that reflects real-world project challenges.
Varied assessment formats
Learners are tested through multiple approaches such as fill-the-gap questions, writing exercises, and multiple-choice activities, each designed to challenge understanding and remove predictability. This variety keeps learners engaged, encourages critical thinking, and ensures concepts are retained for future application.
Collaboration in learning
The platform includes a collaborative feature that allows individuals within the same organisation to communicate and discuss challenging content or activities. In today’s hybrid work environment, this social aspect provides a vital communication channel, fostering teamwork and shared learning.

Light-bulb moments

After completing both the foundation and intermediate levels, I experienced several lightbulb moments – particularly during the intermediate level learning. Although I had prior project experience, there were activities which I didn’t fully understand ‘the why’ behind – at the time, they seemed complicated, and in a fast-moving project environment, it’s often difficult to grasp the full context behind processes. Now, having gone through the learning and assessments, I truly understand the reasoning behind these activities and the correct procedures for carrying them out.

Another element of the learning I still find extremely useful is the “just in time” component, I can dip in and out of the learning as I need to as a refresher of a topic or to revise an area that I haven’t utilised before.  Working in project controls as I was prior to my CITI journey, I felt I was completing tasks in isolation but now I have an oversight into dependencies, critical success, how project teams ought to communicate and the “why” – it’s so important to understand other parts of the lifecycle for my own progression and to support others.  I have gained a lot of a-ha moments during my learning through YourCITI and am looking forward to developing further.
